The Companions Who Attended the Second Pledge of Aqabah

In the thirteenth year of the Prophet's mission, seventy-three men and two women from the people of Yathrib (later known as Medina) met the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the Hajj season.

They pledged allegiance to him in what became known as the Second Pledge of Aqabah. This pledge marked a turning point in the Islamic call, paving the way for the Prophet's migration to Medina and the establishment of the first Islamic state.

First: From the Tribe of Aws (11 Men)

These are the companions from the tribe of Aws who pledged allegiance at the Second Aqabah and played a vital role in supporting Islam in Medina:

  1. Usayd ibn Hudayr – A noble leader of Aws, he accepted Islam at the hands of Mus'ab ibn Umayr and was among the first to support the Prophet ﷺ.
  2. Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tayhan – From the early and sincere believers. He witnessed Aqabah, Badr, and Uhud, and was among those who pledged to fight to the death at Hudaybiyyah.
  3. Salamah ibn Salamah ibn Waqsh – A sincere believer who witnessed the Second Aqabah and participated in the Prophet’s ﷺ campaigns.
  4. Zuhayr ibn Rafi’ – One of the early supporters who helped spread Islam in Aws.
  5. Abu Burdah ibn Niyyar – A memorizer of the Qur’an, he witnessed Aqabah and Badr and was known for his knowledge and asceticism.
  6. Nuhayr ibn al-Haytham – A participant in Aqabah and a carrier of the Islamic message among his people.
  7. Sa’d ibn Khaythamah – His father preceded him in migration. Sa’d participated in Badr and was martyred there.
  8. Rafa’ah ibn Abd al-Mundhir – Attended Aqabah and was respected among his people.
  9. Abd Allah ibn Jubayr – The commander of the archers at Uhud. He remained steadfast and was martyred there.
  10. Ma’n ibn ‘Adi – A notable of Aws and supporter of the Prophet ﷺ.
  11. ‘Uwaym ibn Sa’idah – Present at Aqabah and Badr; known for his devotion and worship.

Third: The Two Women Who Pledged at the Second Aqabah

  1. Umm Umara Nusaybah bint Ka’b – A warrior woman who witnessed Aqabah and fought valiantly at Uhud, defending the Prophet ﷺ.
  2. Umm Munia’ Asma’ bint ‘Amr ibn ‘Adi – One of the earliest female believers, pledged her loyalty and supported the Islamic cause.

The Pledge

They pledged to:

  • Listen and obey in all circumstances
  • Support the Prophet ﷺ when he came to them
  • Not in dispute with the rightful authority
  • Speak the truth and fear no one in the way of Allah

This formed the foundation upon which the Islamic state in Medina was built, and they were the best supporters of the faith.
