The Names of the Ten Companions Promised Paradise

The ten companions promised Paradise (Al-‘Asharah Al-Mubasharun bil-Jannah) are ten noble companions of the Prophet Muhammad—may Allah be pleased with them all—whom the Prophet ﷺ gave glad tidings that they would enter Paradise. Allah, by His grace and mercy, guaranteed them entry into it. These companions were among the most virtuous, the highest in status, and the best among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Their names were mentioned together in a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. All ten were from the Quraysh tribe, and two of them—Uthman ibn Affan and Ali ibn Abi Talib—were specifically from the Banu Abd Manaf clan.

Below is a brief introduction and the virtues of each:

1. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq

His full name is Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafa At-Taymi Al-Qurashi. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq was the Prophet’s closest companion and the first caliph after him. He was also the father of Aisha, the Mother of the Believers.

Abu Bakr played a key role in supporting the Prophet ﷺ and Islam, and many other companions embraced Islam through him, including five of the ten promised Paradise: Uthman ibn Affan, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Az-Zubair ibn Al-Awwam, Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, and Talhah ibn Ubaydullah.

2. Umar ibn Al-Khattab

Omar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, nicknamed Al-Farooq for his ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. He succeeded Abu Bakr as caliph and was the first to be titled Amir al-Mu'mineen (Commander of the Faithful).

A respected Qurayshi leader, he strengthened Islam and was known for his courage and justice. Even Satan was said to flee from his path. Many of his opinions aligned with Qur'anic revelations. His caliphate saw major Islamic expansions and organizational reforms.

3. Uthman ibn Affan

The third caliph, known as Dhul-Nurayn ("Possessor of Two Lights") because he married two of the Prophet’s daughters: Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum. He was wealthy and generous, famously funding the Army of Difficulty (for the Battle of Tabuk) and purchasing the well of Rumah for the Muslims. Uthman ibn Affan was known for his modesty, to the extent that even the angels were shy around him.

4. Ali ibn Abi Talib

Ali ibn Abi Talib is the fourth caliph, cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, and husband of Fatimah (the Prophet’s daughter). He was the father of Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn. Ali embraced Islam at a young age and never worshiped idols. He risked his life during the Hijrah by sleeping in the Prophet’s bed. He took leadership after Uthman’s assassination.

5. Az-Zubair ibn Al-Awwam

Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam was the Prophet’s cousin, his mother was Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib. Known as the disciple of the Prophet, he was the first to unsheathe his sword in defense of Islam. He witnessed the Battle of Badr and all the major battles. A fearless and courageous warrior.

6. Talhah ibn Ubaydullah

Talhah ibn Ubaydullah was among the early converts to Islam and endured torture for his faith. The Prophet ﷺ called him Talhah the Good and Talhah the Generous, especially after he shielded the Prophet during the Battle of Uhud. He was known for his immense wealth and generosity, often giving away everything he earned.

7. Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf

Among the first to embrace Islam through Abu Bakr. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf endured hardship for his faith and was known for his wealth, generosity, and humility. He once led the Prophet in prayer. Upon his death, he left large sums to the Prophet’s wives and relatives. Despite his wealth, he lived modestly and was indistinguishable from his servants in appearance.

8. Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas

Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas embraced Islam at age 17, despite strong opposition from his mother. He was the first to shoot an arrow in defense of Islam. He commanded the army during the Battle of Qadisiyyah, defeating the Persians. He participated in major battles of the Prophet, including Badr and Uhud, where he remained by the Prophet’s side when others fled.

9. Abu Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarrah

Nicknamed The Trustworthy of the Ummah by the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah is one of the earliest converts and participated in major battles including Badr. The Prophet sent him to the people of Najran as a trusted representative. Umar appointed him as a commander in several Islamic conquests. He passed away during the Plague of Amwas.

10. Sa’id ibn Zayd

A cousin and brother-in-law of Umar ibn Al-Khattab. Sa'id ibn Zayd was among the first to embrace Islam and participated in all major battles. He took part in the siege and conquest of Damascus and was appointed its governor by Abu Ubaydah.

By learning about their lives, we not only honor their legacy but also gain inspiration to strengthen our own faith, strive for righteousness, and seek the pleasure of Allah in all that we do. May we follow in their footsteps and be among those who are granted Paradise, by the mercy of Allah.
