Introduction to the Migration to Abyssinia

The migration of the Muslims to Abyssinia took place in the fifth year of the Prophethood, after the harm and persecution by the polytheists against the Muslims had increased. While the emigrants were there, an incident occurred which led them to believe that Quraysh had embraced Islam. The incident was that the Prophet ﷺ recited Surat al-Najm at the Ka'bah in the presence of a large gathering of Meccan elites. When he reached the verse of prostration, he prostrated, and both the believers and the polytheists prostrated with him, due to being awestruck by what they heard.

When the emigrants returned, they discovered the truth and some of them went back to Abyssinia. This time, a larger number followed them. In the first migration, they were twelve men and four women. In the second migration, they were eighty-three men and eighteen women.

Abyssinia was chosen because it had a just king under whom no one was wronged, as the Prophet ﷺ said. Quraysh tried to bring them back, but they failed in their efforts.
