The Companions Names Who Were Martyred in the Battle of Badr
The Battle of Badr took place on the 17th of Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah. It was the first battle between the Muslims and the disbelievers of Quraysh and is considered one of the decisive battles in the history of Islam. Allah named it Yawm al-Furqan (The Day of Distinction) because it distinguished truth from falsehood.
The Muslims were victorious over the Quraysh disbelievers. Seventy men from the disbelievers were killed, and seventy others were taken captive, while fourteen Muslim men were martyred and ascended to their Lord—may Allah accept them all.
Martyrs of the Battle of Badr from the Muhajirun (Emigrants)
Six martyrs from the Muhajirun were elevated during the Battle of al-Furqan—may Allah accept them in the highest ranks:
- Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf, known as Abu al-Harith, was one of Quraysh’s knights.
- Umayr ibn Abi Waqqas ibn Abi Ahib al-Zuhri – He was killed by Amr ibn Wudd al-‘Amiri. The Prophet ﷺ had initially prohibited Umayr from joining the battle due to his young age. Umayr cried and pleaded, so the Prophet eventually allowed him to fight, and he was martyred in battle.
- Dhu al-Shimalayn ‘Umayr ibn ‘Abd ‘Amr ibn Nadlah al-Khuza‘i.
- ‘Aqil ibn al-Bukayr, from the tribe of Banu Sa‘d ibn Layth ibn ‘Abd Manat ibn Kinana. He was among the earliest Muslims who pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ at Dar al-Arqam.
- Muhja‘ al-‘Akki, the freed slave of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar had emancipated him, and he was among the early Muslims. He was the first martyr in the Battle of Badr.
- Safwan ibn Wahb ibn Rabi‘ah ibn Hilal al-Fihri, who was killed by Tu‘aymah ibn ‘Adi al-Nawfali on the day of Badr.
Martyrs of the Battle of Badr from the Ansar (Helpers)
Eight martyrs from the Ansar were elevated—six from the Khazraj tribe and two from the Aws tribe. May Allah accept them all in the highest ranks:
- Sa‘d ibn Khaythamah ibn al-Harith ibn Malik al-Khazraji, one of the early Muslims and one of the twelve leaders (nuqaba) who pledged allegiance at al-‘Aqabah.
- Mubashshir ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir ibn ‘Ali Zanbar al-Khazraji al-Ansari.
- Yazid ibn al-Harith (or al-Harth) ibn Qays ibn Malik al-Ansari al-Khazraji, known as Ibn Fasḥam. The Prophet ﷺ paired him with Dhu al-Shimalayn, who was also martyred at Badr.
- ‘Umayr ibn al-Humam ibn al-Jamuh ibn Zayd ibn Haram al-Khazraji al-Ansari – He threw away the dates he was eating while standing in the battle ranks, fearing they would delay him from fighting the polytheists and entering Paradise. He then fought until he was killed.
- Harithah ibn Suraqah ibn al-Harith al-Ansari al-Awsi al-Najjari – He was struck by a stray arrow and martyred. His mother, al-Rubayyi‘ bint al-Nadr, was the aunt of Anas ibn Malik and considered his maternal relative.
- Rafi‘ ibn al-Mu‘alla ibn Lawdhan ibn Harithah al-Khazraji al-Ansari, who was killed by Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl.
- ‘Awf ibn al-Harith ibn Rifa‘ah ibn Sawad and Mu‘awwidh ibn al-Harith ibn Rifa‘ah ibn Sawad – They were brothers, and it is said they both participated in killing Abu Jahl.
