Stories About the Humor of the Prophet

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had a sense of humor and maintained it among his companions. Abu Huraira once said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, you joke with us!” He replied, “I only speak the truth”. He would joke with both the young and the old in a way that caused no harm. Below are some stories about his humor.

The Prophet’s Humor with the Elderly Woman

An old woman came to the Prophet (PBUH) asking him to pray for her to enter Paradise. He told her, “No old woman will enter Paradise!” She left saddened, not understanding his words. When he saw her distress, he comforted her, explaining that she would not enter Paradise as an old woman, but in the youth of her prime.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Indeed, We have produced them in a [new] creation * And made them virgins * Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age”. The Prophet (PBUH) recited this verse to her, and she felt reassured.

The Prophet’s Humor with Children

The Prophet (PBUH) was very playful with children. Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet once said to him jokingly, “O two-eared one,” referring to his attentiveness. He also used to joke with Anas’s younger brother, who had a pet bird.

He would ask, “O Abu Umayr, what happened to the Nughayr (small bird)?” to comfort him after the bird died.

The Prophet’s Humor with Zahir

Zahir was a man from the desert who loved the Prophet and would bring him gifts when visiting Madinah. One day, while Zahir was selling goods in the market, the Prophet (PBUH) approached him from behind and hugged him. The Prophet jokingly announced, “Who will buy this slave?” Zahir replied that no one would buy him due to his unattractiveness. The Prophet reassured him, saying, “But in the sight of Allah, you are valuable”.

Stories About the Patience of the Prophet

The Prophet’s Patience at the Kaaba

The Prophet (PBUH) once prayed at the Kaaba when the polytheists, led by Abu Jahl, placed camel intestines on his back while he was in prostration. T

hey laughed and mocked him, but he remained in sujood until his daughter Fatimah came and removed the filth. After he finished praying, he prayed against each of them, and they later perished at the Battle of Badr.

The Prophet’s Patience with the People of Ta’if

The Prophet (PBUH), accompanied by Zayd ibn Haritha, went to Ta’if to call its people to Islam. After several days of preaching, they rejected him and incited their foolish youth to mock and stone him.

His feet bled, and he returned to Makkah in sorrow. Then the Angel Jibreel and the Angel of the Mountains came and offered to crush Ta’if between two mountains. The Prophet refused, hoping that their descendants would one day embrace Islam.

The Prophet’s Patience in His Mission

When Allah commanded the Prophet to warn his tribe, he climbed Mount Safa and called out to them. When they gathered, he asked, “Would you believe me if I told you that an army was advancing to attack you?” They replied yes. He then said, “I am a warner to you from Allah”. Abu Lahab, his uncle, insulted him, saying, “May you perish! Did you gather us for this?” The people dispersed, and the Prophet endured their rejection.

The Prophet’s Patience on the Loss of Khadijah

Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wise and supportive wife of the Prophet, passed away early in the prophetic mission. Her death caused him immense sorrow, and that year was called the Year of Sorrow. Despite this grief and the rising threats from Quraysh, the Prophet (PBUH) remained patient and steadfast.

Stories of the Prophet with His Wives

The Prophet and Aisha’s Jealousy

Once, while at Aisha’s house, another wife of the Prophet sent him food. Aisha, feeling jealous, struck the dish from his hand, and it broke. The Prophet calmly gathered the food and said, “Your mother has become jealous”. He then replaced the broken dish with one from Aisha’s house and sent it back through a servant.

The Prophet Playing with His Wives

According to Sahih Muslim, the Prophet once said to his wives, “The one with the longest hand will join me first”. The wives began measuring their hands, thinking it meant physical length. It was Zaynab who was the most generous in charity. They playfully competed with one another until Zaynab passed away, fulfilling the Prophet’s words.

The Prophet’s Marriage to Safiyyah

Safiyyah bint Huyayy, a noblewoman from a Jewish tribe, was captured during a battle. A man suggested to the Prophet (PBUH) that she was too noble to be treated as a regular captive. The Prophet freed and married her, making her freedom her dowry, thereby preserving her dignity and honor.

Stories of the Prophet with His Companions

The Prophet and the Companion Suwad

During preparation for a battle, the Prophet was aligning the ranks of his soldiers. He found Suwad standing out of line and gently tapped him with a stick to correct his position. Suwad claimed injury and asked for justice. The Prophet bared his stomach, allowing Suwad to strike back. Instead, Suwad embraced and kissed the Prophet’s stomach, expressing his love and hoping it would be the last skin he touched before martyrdom.

The Prophet and Abu Bakr During the Migration

During the migration to Madinah, Abu Bakr accompanied the Prophet. As they approached the Cave of Thawr, Abu Bakr entered first to ensure it was safe. Throughout the journey, he would alternately walk ahead, behind, or beside the Prophet out of deep concern for his safety. May Allah be pleased with him.
