24 Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad about Ramadan
Hadiths about the Virtues of Ramadan
Many Hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) have been mentioned, illustrating the virtues of the great Ramadan. Among these Hadiths are the following:
- The Gates of Paradise are Opened, the Gates of Hell are Closed, and the Devils are Chained: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained". [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
- Sins are Forgiven: It is reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he said: "The five daily prayers, from one Friday prayer to the next, and from one Ramadan to the next are expiation for sins committed in between, so long as major sins are avoided". [Narrated by Muslim]
- Forgiveness for Fasting and Praying on Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and with the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. And whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and seeking his reward, his previous sins will be forgiven". [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
- Equivalent to Fasting for a Lifetime: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Fasting three days of each month and Ramadan to Ramadan are equivalent to fasting a lifetime". [Narrated by Ahmad and An-Nasa'i]
- The Gate of Rayyan for the Observers of Fasting on the Day of Judgment: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, there is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who observe fasting will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection, and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, 'Where are the fasting people?' They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After the last of them, it will be closed, and no one will enter through it". [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
- Allah Added Fasting for Its Great Reward and Virtue: Allah, the Almighty, said: "Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting, for it is for Me and I shall reward for it. Fasting is a shield; when anyone of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice. If anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: 'I am fasting'. By Him in Whose hand the soul of Muhammad is, the breath of one observing Saum (fasting) is sweeter to Allah on the Day of Judgment than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts has two joys: one when he breaks his fast and the other when he meets his Lord. The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is better with Allah than the scent of musk". [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
- One of the Five Pillars of Islam: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Islam is built on five pillars: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving Zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan". [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]
- Reason to Enter Paradise: According to the hadith narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), "If I pray the obligatory prayers, fast Ramadan, treat the lawful as permissible and the forbidden as impermissible, and do not add anything to that, will I enter Paradise?" He said, "Yes". [Narrated by Muslim]
- Many are Freed from Hellfire in Ramadan: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A caller will call out: 'O seeker of good, come forward, and O seeker of evil, stop, and there are many whom Allah will free from the Fire, and that is every night". [Narrated by Ahmad and An-Nasa'i]
- Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) in Ramadan: Allah, the Most High, has favored the month of Ramadan by placing within it a night that is greater than a thousand months. It is a night in which sins are forgiven and acts of worship are multiplied. As Allah says: "Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months". [Quran 97:1-3]
- Revelation of the Quran: Allah says: "The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion". [Quran 2:185]
